The pop-up lake of Union Street

by Vic Keegan

100 Union Street Southwark

I glimpsed this urban oasis from a train coming from London Bridge (on top of the arches, above) and was soon wandering down Union Street beyond the Jerwood gallery to check it out. What a space!  The artificial lake and cafe you see from the road aren’t the half of it. Underneath the arches there are cavenous chambers that could be used for galleries, offices  or recreational space. This is the fifth and most ambitous attempt by the EXYZT collective of architects, carpenters, alchemists  and bottle washers to turn redundant places into community spaces. They should be let loose around more of the Capital. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 12am to 8pm.
