A curious football match in the Park

I was walking today through Archbishop’s Park in Lambeth as I often do

When a woman on a park bench started clapping as if on cue

I wondered why she was smiling with such glee.

There was noone else –  but why me

It wasn’t.

She had been looking through  one of Archbishop’s Park’s coveted riches.

One of those fenced off grass cages with football pitches

A young boy had got away from away from an awkward tangle

To score an impressive goal from an acute angle

The woman got up and walked away to my surprise

With unblemished pride in her eyes

Goodness, this was her son who at the end of the game had stole

What may well have been the winning goal

Of course anything could happen come what may

But who knows this child may one day turn out to be

the Jude Bellingham of his day

(Photo taken after the children’s game had ended)
